SURABAYA - Menginjak minggu terakhir liburan sekolah, tempat-tempat wisata lokal masih dipadati pengunjung.
(ign/ari)

East Java won three of six gold medals on offer on the opening day of the track and field competition at the National Games (PON) at Palaran Stadium in Samarinda on Monday.
Darwati won the first gold for East Java by winning the 20-kilometer walk in the morning. Lusi Febrianti and Eddy Zakaria accounted for the other two golds, in the women’s high jump and men’s 110-meter hurdles, respectively.
West Java, West Papua and Riau won the other three golds, while Central Java, North Sumatra, East Nusa Tenggara, Bangka Belitung and Papua all picked up silver and bronze medals.
Djoko Sudargo, chief of East Java’s athletics team, expressed his pleasure with the results of the first day of the track and field competition, saying three golds was beyond their wildest expectations.
“I did not expect gold in the high jump. We were surprised that Lusi (Febriyanti) won it for us,” Djoko said.
Lusi cleared 1.65 meters to finish ahead of West Java’s Dewi Ika Puspita and Helam Nurul Ulfa.
In the women’s 20-kilometer walk, Darwati finished in a time of one hour, 49 minutes and 33 seconds. Indonesian veteran Tersiana Riwu Rohi of East Nusa Tenggara finished in third place in a time of 1:57:55, behind Central Java’s Risa Wijayanti (1:51:53).
East Java’s third gold came late in the day, with Eddy Zakaria winning the men’s 110-meter hurdles in 14.18 seconds. Zulkarnaen Purba of North Sumatra and Eddy’s teammate, Rusli, finished second and third, respectively.
“This is the fruit of long training that started at the end of PON 2004. We are still counting on our veterans, but they were still be able to beat their younger rivals,” Djoko said, adding that the team would be happy with another two medals in track and field.
A total of 46 gold medals are on offer in track and field.
In the men’s 20-kilometer walk, Kristian L. Tobing of North Sumatra won in a time of 1:35:50. Sutrisno of Central Java followed in second in 1:37:51 and Andre Maulana of West Java finished third (1:37:55).
West Java’s Dony Susanto won the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.45 meters. Slamet Susanto of East Java and Asril of Bangka Belitung finished second and third with jumps of 7.29 and 7.18 meters, respectively.
The last gold on offer went to West Papua in the men’s javelin, with Julius Morin taking the event with a throw of 67.01 meters. Agustinus Mahuse of Papua finished in second with 65.79 meters, and M. Rusmanto won bronze for Central Java with a throw of 63.80 meters.
The opening day of the track and field competition also saw preliminary heats in men’s and women’s 200 meters and 800 meters.
Olympic hopeful Suryo Agung Wibowo, who represents Central Java, is the favorite to win the men’s 200 meters in Tuesday’s final after finishing with the fastest qualifying time.
Irene Truitje Joseph, a past champ in the women’s 100 meters, could only finish with the second-fastest qualifying time in the 200 meters, behind Dedeh Erawati. Both run for Jakarta.
“I’m not expecting to win the 200 meters. I’m concentrating on the 100 meters although Dedeh will still be the favorite along with Serafi (Anelis),” said the 29-year-old Irene, who is participating in her fourth PON since 1996. She won 100 meters gold at the 1999 Southeast Asian Games.

The inclusion of American shuttler Tony Gunawan in East Java’s team currently competing at the National Games has received criticism among national players, who argue the games should serve as a recruiting ground for home-grown talent.
At the Sydney 2000 Olympics, Tony, pairing with Candra Wijaya, gave Indonesia their only gold medal at the games.
“I suggest you ask Pa Yacob (Rusdianto),” Budi Nugroho, from the Jakarta team, said. “In the future we have to limit the age of participants to 23 to adhere to the Olympics body recommendation,” Herman Subarja said.
Yacob is the chairman of the East Java badminton chapter and technical delegate member as well as chief of organizational affairs for the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI).
“Tony may play for America but he still holds an East Java residence card. He did not change citizenship. His status is only that of a permanent resident. He is Indonesian by citizenship,” he said.
Also on Sunday, in Berau, the host’s sailing team mourned the loss of two relatives of a team member who died in a boating accident on their way to Derawan Island.
Local reports said Sunday the two were among 20 passengers on board the boat when it was hit by a storm. The remaining passengers were reported rescued.
An employee of television station TVOne said his crew, who were reporting on the games, had suffered a theft, in which a laptop and eight cellular phones were stolen from their rented home. The media workers were forced to rent the house because hotels in the area were fully booked.
On Sunday, aerosports, basketball, chess and rock-climbing joined the sports that had kicked off during the opening ceremony.
On Sunday, gymnasts prepared for their Monday floor and bars events, while shuttlers practiced at the badminton hall in Palaran. The practice sections were watched by a small number of locals.
So far in the Games, only four of 749 gold medals have been awarded from 43 sports.
The four gold medals all came in the chess competition, with West Java winning three and East Kalimantan taking the fourth.
The chess competition in Tarakan offers 12 gold medals in total. Four each are at stake in the classic and blitz events.
The rock-climbing qualification rounds for the men’s team lead event and the women’s team boulder event were also wrapped up.
East Java, the favorite in both events, left Central Java and East Kalimantan in provisional second and third in the women’s event.
East Java also topped the men’s event, with West Java and Bali coming in second and third, respectively.
The group-stage basketball matches were completed on Sunday with Papua and West Java from Group X and East Kalimantan, Central Java from Group Y advancing to the semifinals in the women’s division.
In the men’s, Jakarta and Central Java progressed from Group B, while West Java, Aceh and East Kalimantan progressed from their groups to reach the semi-finals. East Java secured its place in the semis on Saturday.
East Java men’s and Jakarta women’s teams looked unstoppable in their campaigns to defend their indoor volleyball championship titles, both winning their two opening matches in Bontang.

Kabupaten Lamongan menampilkan tari boran. Tari itu menggambarkan tentang suasana kehidupan para penjual nasi boran (makanan khas Lamongan). Delapan penari mengenakan kebaya berwarna pink dan hijau tampil sangat energik. Mereka menari sambil membawa boran (tempat nasi). Bahkan, mereka melakukan atraksi sling melempar boran antarpenari.
Sesi terakhir diisi tari Nusantara. Mulai Aceh, Jogjakarta, Bali, hingga Papua.
Selanjutnya, tari kilai khatulistiwa.
East Java clinched its fourth win in the men’s basketball competition at the National Games (PON) to go top of Group A, while West Java had mixed results at the Sempaja basketball arena in Samarinda on Saturday.
East Java, finalists in 2004, defeated Papua 79-67, giving them eight points from four matches and securing a place in the semifinals. West Java, East Kalimantan and Aceh will battle for second place, while Papua, which suffered its third loss, was eliminated.
Earlier, hosts East Kalimantan bounced back from two straight losses to stun West Java 89-69. Both teams are level at four points. Aceh is a point ahead and will take on West Java in the final group match on Sunday.
In Group B, defending champions Jakarta look set to advance after three wins. Central Java and Banten are also still in the running, with West Sumatra and North Sumatra already eliminated.
In the women’s basketball competition, West Java, who lost to Jakarta in the 2004 final, beat North Sumatra 67-55 in Group X to give them an overall five points.
Papua has notched up two victories, while East Java recorded a win and loss.
East Kalimantan leads Group Y with two points, with Central Java and Jakarta following with a win and loss each. South Sumatra has yet to win.
Saturday’s matches were marked by poor attendance, caused mainly by the rain which began in falling in the morning. In the arena, however, the men’s match between West Java and East Kalimantan, was highly energized.
The hosts took the attacking initiative to leave the visitors far behind at 28-10. But West Java bounced back in the second quarter to post 24 points against East Kalimantan’s 12, before cooling off toward the end of the match.
“We only had one big man in Rendra Rudini. Akbar Taufik injured his shoulder during the second quarter, which made it difficult to coordinate our defense,” Enjang Rahmat, West Java’s team supervisor, told The Jakarta Post.
“With our defense dependent on Rendra, we had difficulty keeping their forward, Dodo, in check.”
Dodo scored only 13 points, but his charges into the attacking zone split his opponents’ concentration and left Chrismast Bonanza Siregar free to post 23 points.
West Java has to beat Aceh to keep alive any chance of advancing to the semis. Both teams, as well as the hosts, could finish the group stage with the same number of points. Should this occur, the team with the highest average points scored will advance.
Aceh, a point ahead of West Java and East Kalimantan, have a better chance of advancing. Their surprise run in the competition is being reflected by other teams previously considered cannon fodder. Papua, for instance, has also performed well in defeating West Java and North Sumatra in the women’s competition.
The trend is a positive sign for the country’s future performance in international competitions, Azwar Zulkarnaen, an official from the Indonesian Basketball Association, said.
“I’m happy the teams are equally matched. It makes it more difficult to predict the winner in each match,” he said.
“This gives our association a wider field to choose from when recruiting for the national team, and reflects well on our work thus far.”
The semifinal lineup will be determined after teams play their final group matches on Sunday.

SURABAYA, July 3 (RIA Novosti) - The first three Russian Mi-17-B5 Hip H medium assault/transport helicopters were delivered to Indonesia on Thursday.
Russia signed a contract with Indonesia in 2005 to supply six helicopters made by the Kazan helicopter plant.
“Three helicopters were delivered to the Indonesian ground forces base in the city of Surabaya this morning. Their assembly will start Friday,” Andrei Mironov, who will oversee the assembly of the helicopters, told RIA Novosti Thursday.
Mironov said the remaining three helicopters would arrive in the country soon.
Nikolai Kireyev, a representative of Russian state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport in Jakarta, said 15 pilots and technical specialists from Indonesia visited the Kazan helicopter plant in Russia’s Volga area in the spring for three months of training.
In fall 2007, then Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed with Indonesia’s leadership on Russia allocating a $1 billion loan for Indonesia to buy 22 helicopters, 20 tanks and two submarines made in Russia. Additionally, Jakarta said it would buy six Su aircraft worth a total of $335 million.
Mi-17 is a version of the Mi-8 airframe. The helicopter has a takeoff weight of 13 metric tons and can carry up to 36 people or a payload of 4 tons within the cabin or 4.5 tons outside it. The helicopters have been delivered to 80 countries.

With the National Games in East Kalimantan three days away, organizers on Wednesday kicked off the torch relay, which will make its way through the three host cities of Tarakan, Samarinda and Balikpapan.
“The torch relay is aimed at promoting the Games, especially in a vast province like East Kalimantan,” National Sports Council (KON) deputy chairman Hendardji Supandji said Tuesday.
Hendardji said organizers were finalizing the preparation of the venues and other support facilities.
“We’ve prepared transportation connecting different Games venues as well as accommodation for athletes.
“We have also readied some power generators to help cover power supply for the Games,” he said.
He said the karate venue and badminton courts were still being prepared.
“We’re working on it,” he said.
Hendardji said KON was still waiting for the names of athletes taking part in shooting and boxing events.
“We haven’t received the names yet from the boxing and shooting bodies, but we’ll wait until (Tuesday) tonight,” he said.
More than 6,000 athletes from 33 provinces across the country will participate in the quadrennial sporting competition, which will feature 43 events. Some events, like paragliding, sport dance, roller-skating and marching band, are being re-introduced to the Games. Paragliding is being included after a 23-year absence, with athletes from North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Jakarta, Banten, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, North Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, South Kalimantan and East Kalimantan taking part in the event.
Due to the lack of venues for the Games and the necessary qualifying rounds, organizers have held some events early before the Games cauldron is lit. Basketball matches started Tuesday. Soccer, rock climbing, volleyball and chess will begin Thursday. (nkn)

ID Nugroho, The Jakarta Post, Bondowoso, East Java
It was curiosity that motivated Jadjit Bustomi to take his students from SD Sucolor I Maesan Bondowoso elementary school to Paseban hill for a study tour back in 1977.
The excursion almost turned into tragedy when a student slipped on a stone and fell over, rolling down the hill.
“At that time, I realized how dangerous a barren hill is. Rocks from a landslide could fall on people living down below,” Jadjit recalled.
After the incident he began thinking about regreening the 118-hectare barren hill not far from his home in Maesan, Bondowoso regency, East Java, but he was not sure where to start.
The former fiber company worker from the East Java town of Kediri decided to move to Sucolor in 1977 to try his luck as a teacher.
He was switching to a job that reflected his training as a graduate of the government-run Teachers Education School in Kediri.
He made the decision to move after learning that many teachers frequently asked to be transferred out of Sucolor, located some 12 kilometers from Bondowoso’s city center.
Their reasons were not clear, but Jadjit suspected it was because the area’s infertile and barren land made it uncomfortable to live in.
When he first set foot in Sucolor, he was stunned. Apart from the barren hill, the entire area was dried out.
“I don’t know why, but at the time I was thinking about how I could change the situation,” Jadjit said.
The answer appeared right before his eyes, when he saw his students suffering in the scorching heat as they walked home after school.
Already a hobby gardener, Jadjit came up with the idea of encouraging his students to plant trees along the road heading to the village.
“I just didn’t want students to suffer from the scorching heat while they were walking home from school,” Jadjit said.
Now several years later, the trees have grown and serve as “umbrellas” along the road toward the school.
Jadjit came up with more ideas, this time working on rice fields and farms belonging to his neighbors that were used to grow vegetables and other secondary crops.
However, the father of two adopted children found out the vegetables and other secondary crops planted around the rice fields and farms brought in little revenue for the villagers.
He introduced three plant varieties — pete tree, which produces beans with a pungent odor, mango and durian.
In the beginning, no one welcomed his ideas.
“Maybe because they were not used to it. So I tried planting them first in my own field. Finally the villagers realized that pete, mango and durian are more profitable to grow.”
Within a year, a single pete tree can produce 6,000 pods of pete. In a city, each pod can fetch Rp 2,000.
Villagers were soon asking Jadjit to teach them how to plant it and pete became the new farming treasure of Sucolor.
In order to meet demand for pete seed, Jadjit and the villagers produced at least 100,000 seeds for further farming.
“Those seeds aren’t for sale. The residents only replace the Rp 200 (20 US cents) cost per seed for production and the money is used to produce more seeds,” Jadjit said.
Pete trees, as well as durian and mango, turned the once-barren hill a lavish green, while Jadjit became known as the resident seed expert.
Far from satisfied, he continued searching for plants that were both suitable for Sucolor’s soil and would be profitable for the villagers.
Jadjit only gained recognition for his efforts when he won a competition to plant a million trees back in 2004, but has since won several awards, including the Kalpataru Award on June 5 this year for World Environment Day.
The award was presented by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to Jadjit, who went on to be a principal of SD Sucolor from 1987 until this year, for his dedication to environment preservation beyond his official duties.
But despite the accolades and the cash prize of Rp 10 million — which falls far short of the time and money Jadjit has dedicated to environmental restoration and community building — he remains a humble man.
“Actually, I don’t like the idea of being awarded, but that’s up to others,” he said.

SURABAYA - Di tangan para perancang muda kreatif, bahan-bahan bekas mampu disulap menjadi gaun unik nan menawan.
Salah seorang peserta, Eveline Anggraini, unjuk karya lewat gaun malam backless.
