Tenggerese People

Tenggerese or Tengger People is one of Indonesian tribes that live around Bromo Mountain which located around Pasuruan, Lumajang, Probolinggo and Malang Regency.

The Tenggerese are the descendants of the Majapahit Princes. Their population is about 600.000 inhabitants within thirty villages.

Tenggerese are being known as obedient Hindu followers. For them, Bromo Mountain is sacred. In once in a year they held ceremony of Kasada or Yadnya Kasada as a thanks giving to the Lord. This ceremony is always held in midnite in full moon time around date of 14 or 15, based on Javanese Calender.

Beside Hindu, Tenggerese are also incorporated with Buddhist and Animist. Like Balinese, they worship Sang Hyang Widi Wasa or Big Almighty Lord. Their places of worship include the Punden, Poten and Danyang. The Poten is a sacred area of ground at Mt. Bromo’s Sand sea, and becomes the focus of the annual Kasada Ceremony. Within the Poten, it contains several buildings and enclosures, arranged in a specific composition called the Mandalas (Zones).

The Tenggeres also worship a host of spirits or such ancestor worship. Cikal Bakal is the spirit of the founders of the village, while the Roh Bahurekso is the village guardian spirit and The Roh Leluhur is the spirit of ancestors.

The name Tengger is believed taken from the name of the ancestor, who was Roro Anteng and Joko Seger. In daily speaking, Tenggerese speak in Javanese, in Majapahit dialect, which is Bahasa Tengger. They also have their own written based on Kavi script, an old Javanese Brahmu type.

The Tenggerese are basically either agriculturalists or nomadic herders. The agriculturalists generally live on the lower altitudes, while the nomads live on the higher altitudes, riding on small horses. Regarding that Bromo Mountain is the most attractive Mountain that visited by worldwide tourist, it makes Tenggerese find the opportunities to make a living by guiding, renting a horse, selling merchandise or selling food in stalls around Bromo Mountain.

Bromo Mountain

Bromo mountain, is the most popular destination in Indonesia that always been visited by both tourist local or foreign. Bromo Mountain is an active volcanic mountain, located in Probolinggo regency, East Java. At 2,329 meters (7,641 ft) it is not the highest peak after all, but is the most well know mountain.

The area is one of the most visited tourist attractions in East Java, Indonesia. The volcano belongs to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The name of Bromo derived from Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god.

Mount Bromo sits in the middle of a vast plain called the “Sea of Sand” ( in Javanese: Segara Wedi or in Indonesian: Lautan Pasir), a protected nature reserve since 1919. The main gate to the sea of sand and mount Bromo is through Cemorolawang. This is the most crowded visiting area, especially on holidays. There are many kinds activities that could be carried on this area such as; Camping, watching the scenery, horse riding to sea of sand or walking.

Culturally, on the fourteenth day of the Hindu festival of Yadnya Kasada, the Tenggerese people of Probolinggo, East Java, travel up the mountain in order to make offerings of fruit, rice, vegetables, flowers and sacrifices of livestock to the mountain gods by throwing them into the caldera of the volcano.

The origin of the ritual lies in the 15th century legend where a princess named Roro Anteng started the principality of Tengger with her husband, Joko Seger. The couple was childless and therefore prays the assistance of the mountain gods. Fortunately, the gods granted them 24 children but stipulated that the 25th child, named Kesuma, must be thrown into the volcano as human sacrifice. The gods’ request was implemented. The tradition of throwing sacrifices into the volcano to appease these ancient deities continues today and called Yadnya Kasada ceremony. Though fraught with danger, some locals risk climbing down into the crater in an attempt to recollect the sacrificed goods that believed could bring them good luck.

Beside its scenery, there is also “Goa Kucing”. According to historical, this is the rest place of Syech Ishaq, a person who spread Islam from Blambangan, Banyuwangi. At that time, there are thousands cats, but finally the cats are gone everywhere. Up to know, on Friday “Legi”, the sound of those cats is heard from the dark cave and it will lose when we are trying to find it.

The other unique of this island is people believe that this island have a mysterious power, which can move to the middle of sea. According to them, when Semeru Mountain had exploded, there was an earthquake and the land of Ketapang village had separated to middle of sea about 5 miles from Probolinggo. Because of that, people call this island “Gili Ketapang”. Gili comes from Madura language, which means, “Flow” and “Ketapang” is the name of the village.

Bromo Mountain

Bromo have known by all of visitor of the worlds. They come to Bromo to watch the sunrise. The visitor also can look down to the crater that full of its smoke, and feel the cold of the air, is probably could only be done in Bromo. Our eyes will also completed by the sea of sand that the way to reach Bromos peak. The main gate to the sea of sand and mount Bromo is through Cemorolawang.

This is the most crowded visiting area, especially on holidays. There are many kinds activities that could be carried on this area such as; Camping, watching the scenery, horse riding to sea of sand or walking. To get to the peak Bromo with its largely open crater, which belch of smoke expelling from its bottom. Mount Bromo has settled by Tenggerese for about thousands years. They who are good of God follower and always do their custom strickly, has historical relationship with Majapahit.

The Antropologist from our country or other country are interesting to do some research, because the Tenggerese are strickly in keeping custom for centuries, without influenced by worlds change. So there so many version of the unique of Tenggerese in Probolinggo, it can be in the forth of tale, folktale, serat and kidung, legend and science report.

As a good follower of God, which have Hinduism belief, they have many kinds of traditional ceremony such as; marriage ceremony, Entas-entas, Wilujengan Karo, Wilujengan Kapat, Wilujengan Kapitu, Wilujengan Kawolu, Wilujengan Kasanga, Wilujengan Kasada. Those of ceremony are lead by a person who supposed to have a magic power to make a communication with powerful things (roh halus) that called Dukun. However, the ancestor of Tenggerese are married couple named Rara Anteng (Teng) and Jaka Seger (Ger).

The combination of the two syllables were than abbreviated as Tengger. They had not child for some years, then they decided to had a meditation. They orayed to God in order that he granted their wish. One day there is aa misterious voice that said: that one day when Sang Hyang Widhi (God) wanted to give them children, one of them had to sacrifice to Bromo Crater (Bromo Mountain). Many days later, Rara Anteng birth her first son named Tumenggung Klewung, then followed by other children and they had 25 children.

Firstly, they didnt want to sacrifice one of their children, but they had a sign from Bromo that they must to keep the promise. Finally, their last son named Raden Kusuma had take by Bromo crater as a requirement for Dewata Sang Hyang Agung (God). Next, the misterious voice of Raden Kusuma gave an order to provide half of the harvest to be sent to Raden Kusuma in Bromo Crater every Full Moon at 14th, Kasada month. Because of that, every full moon at 14th in Kasada Month, people sent Raden Kusuma many kinds of harvest in Bromo mountain. That ceremony, which called Yadnya Kasada becomes a tradition (custom) that held up to know.
