Petik laut ceremony is an annual ceremony which is held by the Situbondo fisherman as a thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bless and kindness from the harvest sea times and safety during fishing time regarding the storm and blizzard.

This ritual is always being attended by thousand fisherman groups, especially from Panarukan. The ceremony itself is nowadays become more modern, starring by artists, traditional performances, music performances, Dangdut orchestra and Gandrung Banyuwangi. There is also “Pengajian” competion, games and sort of.

The main ritual from “Petik Laut” Ceremony is floating the ‘Sesaji’ in the middle of the sea, ‘Sesaji’ is the things to be dedicated to the God, it is contain of foods, rice, spices, but the most important is Cow’s head. The ’sesaji’ boat, is already been prayed of before floated in the middle of the sea. This ceremony is a kind of cultural and national heritage, but the things done by the local society, including the fund. The local inhabitants are also the contributors for this ceremony. The inhabitants believe by doing this ceremonial will save the fisherman while they are fishing toward storm and will have more bless and harvest.

By the large numbers of tribes and customs in East Java, there are traditions and ceremonials which is held annually. Those ceremonials are being prepared both for thanking the grace to The Lord, it is also become tourism destination for tourist or foreigners.

Hence, by those ceremonials, East Java’s Calender of Events 2010 will guide the tourist to see the ceremonial schedule which coming on every month at some districts on East Java, includes of the history, the place or even the local information of those ceremonial.

Basically, the events of local inhabitant held these ceremonial is based on Javanese ancient calender, Tengger and Arabic (Hijriah) calender which is have unconditional of exact dates or days to be inform. Pasuruan City holds various competitions, carnivals and thanksgiving to commemorate its anniversary.

Friday, 19 February – PACITAN REGENCY ANNIVERSARY
Procession of the Pacitan Regency Anniversary begins with the parade of heirlooms and Songsong Agung (umbrella used as weapon) from the house of Notopuran to the Javanese Hall. It is highlighted with traditional art performances and public entertainments from 12 Sub districts. .

February 23 – HAUL K.H. KHAMID
This ceremony is to commemorate the death of a prominent public figure the Mufti K.H. Hamid, the charismatic Moslem spreader founding Salafiyah boarding school. This event is attended not only by Pasuruan community but also from other provinces.

February 25 – THE ANNIVERSARY OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD’S BIRTHDAY
It is a series of activity to commemorate the Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday by distributing food to the people. The food is constructed resembling the mounts Jaler and Estri. The food is firstly paraded from Kuncen Mosque to Taman Mosque with cultural procession.

Februari 26 – HAUL SYEKH MAULANA MALIK IBRAHIM
It is held to commemorate the death of the first Islamic Spreader in Java parading the procession of drummers as far as 250 m, religion lecture for three days consecutively and reciting The Holy Quran. The event is held along Malik Ibrahim Street and Mausoleum Complex in Gresik.

So many ways are being used by the local government to celebrate the new year of Hijriah. At Jogjakarta there is Sekaten, at Solo (Mid Java) there is Grebeg Syuro because it coincidently come with the change of Java’s year which starting from Suro. Any other places like Sukabumi (West Java) is also celebrate this Islamic new year by doing Larung. Different with other places, in Magetan East Java, in order to attract the visitors to come, they make “Ledhug”. Lesung Suro and Bedug Muharam (Ledhug) is drum on continually and it is been combined by the sound of gong and many more instruments then make a uniqueness traditional music.

Before the process of Ledhug is begin, there is a “Prosesi Andum Berkah Bolu Rahayu”, which is the most attractive one. Thousand of societies are gathering in front of town square, struggling to take the Bolu or the bread. Before it goes on procession to go to town square, the bread is on ritual offering, because it believe that it has grace for those who eat it. Moreover, there is Jarak lawu traditional dancing which brought by the elementary students and also Magetan traditional transportation called Delman is being ride in the middle of the crowd. When the sound of Gamelan, traditional music, is presented, the Major of Magetan and other local government is taking the Bolu and welcome flower by Dyah-Bagus magetan (it is like Miss Magetan). The Bolu bread is been modified as a mortar (Lesung), Bedhug and Gong then it is spread out to the people.

Lesung suro is having purpose to celebrate the year of Saka, which starting on 1st Suro. As mention, Lesung or Mortar is a tool for pounding the rise and the object to communicate with the ancestors. Bedhug Muharram is having purpose to celebrate the new year of Hijriyah, which starting on 1st Muharram. Anyway, Bedhug for Moslem is a media for calling the people to pray to God, and Gong is Magetan industrial product, that already becomes an Exported product. Judang is a traditional equipment to carry the ‘Uborampe’ from Magetan society, which want to celebrate the marriage. The main purpose for those celebration is about to dig, to cultivate and to promote magetan traditional and industrial field, in order to develop Magetan as a Tourism Object and Tourism Destination Object.

Praburoro Dance

The word of Praburoro comes from the character of this performance whose name is Roro Rengganis. Praburoro is a type of dramatic dance. The stories that are performed come from the Panji, or the tale of Amir Hamzah, which is influenced by Islamic Persian stories. There are about 40 – 50 people who are involved in this performance. The players are divided into 3 groups.

The musical instrument is the gamelan of Java with slendro tone (a typical Javanese gamelan tone). Praburoro is a very unique presentation. First of all, the dance is a Javanese dance. The costumes are modeled after the wayang (puppet) orang performance. The musical instrument is the Javanese gamelan. The songs are also Javanese. However, the songs can be the songs of the Banyuwanginese; such as Padang Ulan, Waru Doyong, Kembang Waru, etc. The story is about the conquest of a non-moslem country. The performance ends with the scene of the King that has been conquered by Menak Agung Jayengrono and Umarmoyo.

HAUL KANJENG PUSPONEGORO – Gresik

It is celebrated in the end week of Sura (Javanese calendar) to commemorate the death of Pusponegoro, the First Gresik Regent. This event is now opened for public and held at the Pusponegoro Mausoleum, the tomb complex of Sunan Malik Ibrahim.
Location: Gapuro Sukolilo Village, Gresik.

TUTUP PLAYANG – Lamongan

Tutup Playang ceremony is intended to end the activities of fishermen fishing in the sea. It is highlighted with offering of steamed rice cones in the center of fish auction.

For example, the first step from wedding day is start by doing Lamaran Manten or marriage proposal. On Lamaran Manten, the groom and the family attending the bride’s house to propose the women while bringing the Seserahan or kind of Gift to bride’s family. After the Seserahan has taken by the bride’s family, those are choosing the right date to go to the wedding day.

American have their own Thanksgiving Day, but on Kemiren Village is also has its own Thanksgiving day to say grateful to God for the harvest and peace. On the day, the inhabitant are gathering on one place by bringing Tumpeng. Tumpeng is one of Indonesian traditional food which made of yellow rice inside and it has conical form on it. The inhabitant made thousand of Tumpeng or it calls as Tumpeng Sewu. Hence, Banyuwangi’s Thanksgiving is being called as Tumpeng Sewu ceremony.

Grebeg Suro is the biggest culture event in Ponorogo regency that held on a certain occasion of welcomed Islam New Year or Saka New Year that often known as one suro date (one of Javanese month).
